Do Games Get Cancelled Because of Rain/Bad Weather?

Weather & Rain: When Do Games Get Cancelled? 🌧️⚽

Short Answer

Generally at CeleBreak, a bit of rain doesn’t stop a game from happening. However, there are situations where games may be cancelled or suspended if conditions make it unsafe or impossible to play:

  • 🏊🏼‍♂️ Games may be cancelled or stopped if the pitch becomes waterlogged or flooded
  • ⚡️If there is lightning or an electrical storm nearby,
  • ⚠️ Or if the the conditions to travel to the field are considered unsafe

⏰ Because weather conditions can change quickly, especially in Spain, decisions sometimes have to be made close to game time.

✅ Why rain alone usually doesn’t cancel a game

Rain itself is not usually a reason to cancel a game. Many games can still be played safely while it’s raining. In fact, many players prefer to play rather than have the game cancelled because rain appears in the forecast. For this reason, we usually wait to see the real conditions on the pitch instead of cancelling early based only on weather predictions.

❌ Why some games be cancelled in advanced, or suspended in the moment?

🏊🏼‍♂️ Flooded or waterlogged pitches

If it has been raining heavily for a longer period, pools of water can form on the pitch. When this happens, the field may become unplayable or unsafe, and the game may need to be cancelled. Some pitches drain water better than others, so the situation can vary from field to field.

⚡️ Lightning or electrical storms

If there is thunder or lightning nearby, the game must be suspended immediately for safety reasons. Sometimes storms develop quickly, which means a game may already have started when the first thunder is heard. In those cases, the game will be stopped.

🕵🏽 How we decide?

Our Operations team constantly monitors the situation and gathers information from different sources. We stay in contact with:

  • Pitch administrators,
  • Match hosts (organisers),
  • Staff on location who share updates and photos of the field conditions.

All decisions are made based on the real-time information available at that moment. Weather conditions can change very quickly, and it’s not unusual to see heavy rain one moment and sunshine fifteen minutes later.

🔔 When you will know if a game is cancelled?

We always try to confirm or cancel games as early as possible, ideally around 1.5 to 2 hours before kickoff, so players don’t travel unnecessarily. However, because conditions on the pitch can change quickly, sometimes a game may be cancelled close to kickoff, or a game may start and later be suspended.

⚖️ We know this is not ideal, but it allows us to make the most accurate decision based on the real situation at the pitch.

💰 Issuing refunds when a game is cancelled vs suspended

Of course, if we were unable to perform the service which you paid for, you will receive compensation. Either before the game has taken place, as it was cancelled. Or afterwards, in case the game had been suspended.

Games canceled before kick-off

If a game is cancelled before kickoff, all players will receive a full refund automatically.

Games suspended in the moment

If a game has already started but needs to be stopped due to weather conditions, refunds are handled manually. Depending on the situation and how much of the game was played, refunds may be full or partial. Refunds are issued to players who were checked in.

⏳ Because this process is manual, it may take a little time to process.

Why we sometimes wait before cancelling

Weather forecasts are not always accurate, and cancelling too early would mean many playable games would never happen. We often see situations where rain is forecasted, but the weather clears shortly before the game, allowing it to be played normally. For that reason, we sometimes wait for clearer information about the real conditions before cancelling.

🫂 A small request for understanding

Weather decisions are never perfect, and sometimes we have to make decisions with incomplete information.

Our goal is always to make the best possible call based on the situation at the pitch. Our priorities are player safety, fair refunds when needed, and giving players the opportunity to play whenever conditions allow.

We really appreciate your understanding when the weather makes things unpredictable. 🙏🏼
